Assignment 1: Analysis of Research on Death Row Inmates

Psychologists conducting research using historical and contemporary data must make sure that different demographic populations of offenders are not compared with each other. For example, when studying crime rates, much more information can be gleaned by separating male and female offenders, offenders from different age groups, and offenders from different socioeconomic strata.

Using the module readings and the Argosy University online library resources, describe the strengths and weaknesses of research on death row inmates.

Write your initial response in approximately 300 words. Apply APA standards to cite sources.

SOCW 6311 Assignment

Assignment: Developing a Program Evaluation

To ensure the success of a program evaluation, a social worker must generate a specific detailed plan. That plan should describe the goal of the evaluation, the information needed, and the methods and analysis to be used. In addition, the plan should identify and address the concerns of stakeholders. A social worker should present information about the plan in a manner that the stakeholders can understand. This will help the social worker receive the support necessary for a successful evaluation.

To prepare for this Assignment, identify a program evaluation you would like to conduct for a program with which you are familiar. Consider the details of the evaluation, including the purpose, specific questions to address, and type of information to collect. Then, consider the stakeholders that would be involved in approving that evaluation. Review the resources for samples of program evaluations.

Submit the following:

· A 1-page stakeholder analysis that identifies the stakeholders, their role in the agency and any concerns that they might have about the proposed program evaluation

· A 2-page draft of the program evaluation plan to submit to the stakeholders that: Identifies the purpose of the evaluation Describes the questions that will be addressed and the type of information that will be collected Addresses the concerns of the stakeholders that you identified in your Stakeholder Analysis

Watch this bobo doll on youtube here ——->https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xfG55uY2NSU

For this assignment you will watch actual footage of a classic research study in psychology:   the Bobo doll study  conducted by Dr. Albert Bandura (1961/1963).  This video is also embedded at the bottom of this page – scroll all the way down.

After watching the brief research clip, answer the following questions about the design of the study conducted by Dr. Bandura .

1)   What was Dr. Bandura ‘s hypothesis?

2)    What type of research study did Dr. Bandura conduct:  experimental, survey, or case study?  How do you know?

3)    How did Dr. Bandura structure his study?    Please provide a *detailed* response explaining his research design, including   the independent and dependent variables and other controls, if used.

4)  Is this study one that can determine causality?    Why or why not?  What are the broader implications of this study if causality can be concluded?   In other words, what is the take-away message from Dr. Bandura ‘s research and who should listen to this message?   (Hint:  see the supplemental reading at the bottom of this week’s folder if you’re struggling with this question!)

5)  Imagine you wanted to conduct a different type of study… How could you change this study so that you have a correlation?  How could you change this study so that is a longitudinal study that can determine causality?

Write your essay in a word processing program ( providing a minimum of 250 words ) and save the essay to your computer as a .doc or docx file (Microsoft Word format).    This is the format we will use for most essays in this course.

Purpose

This assignment will help you to understand and apply the research concepts you will learn about in this chapter.  It will deepen your understanding of the the scientific method in psychology, strengthen your understating of causality, and develop your critical thinking skills.

Grading

This assignment is worth 20 points toward your course grade and is due by 11:59 pm Sunday of the first week. Late assignments will lose 3 points each day late and will no longer be accepted a week after the due date.

This assignment will be graded based on the quality and accuracy of your answers in applying research design to the video.  Further, the assignment will be graded for your demonstration of critical thinking.

Assignment 1: LASA 2: Memory Training in Older Adults

One of the cognitive changes older adults worry about and fear most is memory loss. Some older adults may assume that any memory loss means that they are developing dementia. However, some memory loss that occurs with aging is normal and can be managed by understanding why it occurs and using memory-training exercises to reduce its impact.

Use your module readings and the Argosy University online library resources to research memory training for older adults. Select an authoritative research article for use in this assignment.

Based on the article and one of the cognitive theories covered in your readings, design your own study that tests a program for memory training in older adults. In your paper include the following:An overview of the changes in memory abilities that occur with aging. This overview should include a description of the difference between normal memory loss that occurs with aging and memory loss that is due to dementia. Review at least one cognitive theory discussed in the readings.
A summary of the research article you chose. The article should provide evidence in support of memory training programs for the elderly such as the one you are proposing.
The hypothesis of your study.
Described the methodology of the proposed study including the age range of the participants, and participant variables such as: 1) age, 2) gender, 3) level of education, 3) SES, 4) level of cognitive functioning, etc.  Ethical considerations should also be discussed.
The details of your memory training program, such as: 1) the specific aspects of memory loss your training would target, 2) how long the training sessions would last, and 3) the measurements you would use to determine whether your training resulted in significant improvement in memory.
Your expected results.
A discussion of whether you would expect any differences based on individual variables such as gender, socio-economic status, level of education, race, ethnicity, etc. Provide reasons for your answer.

Your paper should include a title page with a running head, an abstract and a reference page. The body of the paper should be at least 5 pages in length. It should be double-spaced and in 12 point, Times New Roman font with normal one-inch margins, written in APA style, and free of typographical and grammatical errors.

Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M5_A1.doc.
